How We Turned Our 1990s Bedroom into a Boutique Hotel Retreat (Using Mostly Amazon Finds)

When my husband and I bought our 1990s home, I dreamed of turning every room into a space that reflected our family. This bedroom may be my favorite transformation yet.

Built in the 1990s, our home had great bones, but it also came with a lot of original finishes that had seen very few updates over the years. While there was nothing wrong with it, it never really felt like our home.

Since moving in, I’ve slowly worked through each room, making intentional changes that reflect my personal style. I’m not someone who wants to renovate an entire house overnight. I actually love the process of dreaming, planning, and watching each space evolve.

Our primary bedroom has become one of my favorite transformations yet.

The Vision

Every room I design starts the same way.

Before I purchase a single thing, I create a visual collage of every piece I’m considering. It’s my way of seeing the room before it exists.

As someone who is very visual, this step keeps me from making impulse purchases and helps me see whether everything feels cohesive before I spend any money.

I don’t decorate by following trends.

I decorate by asking myself one simple question:

How do I want this room to feel?

For our bedroom, I knew exactly what I wanted.

I wanted to walk into our room after a long day and feel like I’d escaped everyday life. Between work, photography sessions, editing, laundry, ball games, and all the little moments that fill our days, I wanted one room in our home that felt peaceful.

I kept coming back to the feeling of staying in a cozy boutique hotel.

Soft lighting. Layered bedding. Rich textures. Timeless colors.

A space that immediately makes you exhale.

That became my vision.

One piece had already stolen my heart long before I started redesigning the room…

Our olive velvet curtains.

I loved the richness they brought to the room, so instead of replacing them, I decided they would become the inspiration piece that everything else would revolve around.

From there, the entire room slowly came together.

The Before

Our bedroom wasn’t bad.

It just didn’t feel special.

The walls were plain, the room lacked personality, and it didn’t feel like a space that invited you to slow down and relax.

It was simply where we slept.

I wanted it to become somewhere we wanted to spend time.

The Process

Two things that I knew for certain was that the carpet had to go, and I that I wanted one dramatic statement wall.

We ripped out the old dingy carpet and replaced it with LVP in one weekend. The LVP is the same flooring that we have used in all of our floor renovations throughout the house. It just warms up the space, is easier to keep clean, and is more visually appealing.

As for the statement wall, I am a lover of bold printed wallpaper. I have used different patterns in rooms for years. I searched patterns on Amazon with olive greens, to match the curtains, for days. I kept coming back to the dark floral pattern. I loved the dark background with the contrasting white florals. I loved the hues of green and knew it matched my curtains perfectly. However, I had never used a wallpaper this dark before, and I kept asking myself:

“Is it too dark?”

“Will I regret it?”

“Is this going to make the room feel smaller?”

Even my husband wasn’t completely convinced when I first showed him the wallpaper.

Thankfully, he trusts me enough to let me run with my crazy ideas.

The funny thing is…once the first few panels went up, we both knew it was exactly the right choice. We absolutely feel in love with it!

Instead of making the room feel dark, the wallpaper created warmth.

It instantly made the room feel layered, cozy, and much more custom than it ever had before.

Watching the room transform panel by panel was honestly one of my favorite parts of this project.

Building Around the Statement Wall

Once the wallpaper was finished, everything else seemed to fall into place.

I wanted to keep the room feeling calm, so I chose a quilted white quilt and layered it with an olive green comforter that tied beautifully into the curtains and wallpaper.

One of my favorite decorating tricks is layering different textures instead of adding more color.

The velvet curtains…

The soft bedding…

The vintage-inspired rug…

The linen lamp shades…

Together, they create warmth without making the room feel busy.

To balance the darker wallpaper, I added simple black nightstands that almost disappear against the wall, allowing the brass lamps and wall sconces to become the stars of the room.

Speaking of lighting…

I truly believe lighting is one of the most overlooked parts of decorating.

The warm brass lamps paired with the cordless wall sconces completely changed the feeling of this room in the evenings. They create such a soft glow that instantly makes the room feel cozy.

If I had to choose one thing that makes the room feel like a boutique hotel, it would probably be the lighting.

My Favorite Part

One of the questions I get asked the most is,

“Where did you buy everything?”

People are usually surprised when I tell them that almost every major piece in this room came from Amazon.

The wallpaper.

The curtains.

The lamps.

The sconces.

The nightstands.

The rug.

The bedding.

I spent months researching, reading reviews, and waiting for sales before ordering each piece.

Beautiful spaces don’t have to cost a fortune.

They just have to be thoughtfully put together.

The Reveal

Walking into this room now feels completely different than it did when we first bought our house.

It’s warm.

It’s peaceful.

It’s cozy.

Most importantly…

It feels like us.

Every evening when I walk upstairs, I still catch myself smiling as I open the bedroom door.

It’s become my favorite room in the house because it reminds me why I love decorating so much.

Creating a home isn’t about keeping up with trends or buying expensive furniture.

It’s about creating spaces that support the life you’re living.

For us, this room became a place to rest, recharge, and escape the busyness of everyday life, even if it’s just for a little while each evening.

And honestly…

That’s exactly what I was hoping it would become.

Final Thoughts

One thing I’ve learned while decorating our home is that beautiful spaces aren’t created overnight.

Every room in our house has taken time.

Some projects have stretched over months, and others over years. I’ve learned to be patient, save for the pieces I truly love, and let each room evolve naturally instead of rushing to finish it.

Looking back, I’m actually grateful we bought a home that wasn’t already updated. It gave us the opportunity to create something that reflects our family and our story instead of someone else’s.

Room by room, this 1990s house is becoming a home that feels completely like us.

Thank you for following along as I share the journey. I can’t wait to show you what’s next.

Until next time,

Natalie
